European Union = criminal organization !
The European Court of Auditors (ECA), which is responsible for checking the finances of the EU institutions, reported on Tuesday that the Union had misused 6.2 billion euros (USD 8.4 billion) in 2012.
The errors affected 4.8 percent of the 138.6 billion euros in EU payments. It was the third year of increase in the error rate, up from 3.7 Percent in 2010.
Most failures involved lack of respect for public procurement rules as well as payouts for projects that were ineligible There were also several reported cases of suspected fraud.
« The financial management of the EU is still not good enough and must be improved, » said ECA President Vitor Caldeira, adding, « The EU is spending too much money on too many unjustified demands. »
According to the group’s estimates, the highest error rates were found in the fields of agriculture, regional policy, rural development as well as employment and social affairs.
“Europe’s citizens have a right to know what their money is being spent on and whether it is being used properly,” said Caldeira adding, “They also have a right to know whether it is delivering value, particularly at a time when there is such pressure on public finances.”
Meanwhile, EU lawmaker Ryszard Czarnecki of the European Conservatives and Reformists called on the European Commission to appoint one of its top officials to focus solely on tackling spending errors.
« We must end this annual debacle. It undermines confidence in the EU as a whole, » said Czarnecki.
This comes at a time when the bloc’s member states have imposed harsh austerity measures in a bid to improve their stricken economies after Europe plunged into financial crisis in early 2008.
The tough economic reforms have triggered incidents of social unrest and massive protests in many European countries.
